The Innocent Pawn

Gap III production – August 2019

Written and directed by Amanda Crewes

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It’s simply there – when yesterday it was not.

“The Innocent Pawn” is the final instalment of a trilogy piece, following “One Punch Wonder” (2017) and Implied Consent (2018), looking at instigating cultural change.

With the intent of starting a conversation, “The Innocent Pawn” explores pornography from all angles,  its effects on our culture, and relationship with the  objectification and sexualisation  of men and women within our society.

This verbatim piece uses interviews conducted, around the world, with people who have shared their raw, authentic and candid experiences with pornography, illuminating its role in our contemporary society.

Has the pendulum swung too far? Juxtaposing highly physical theatre against verbatim dialogue, this piece uses the convention of theatre in the round to throw the actors into the spotlight, asking the question “Can we speak about this or are some topics too taboo?”
